Your business, yourself

Most of Sunday evening was spent yelling at my television – I love the Olympics but can’t sit there quietly.  I love the athletes’ dedication and sheer passion including their attention to detail.  That’s what makes you a winner; it’s what sets you apart.  So, later in the evening, when I was watching BBC’s Dragons Den, again this week I was struck by how little business owners really know about their own company and by that I mean the nuts and bolts of the finances.  When questioned, all too often they say “well, I have an accountant who deals with that and they told me the figures”.  Of course, having an accountant is great but, hang on, your business is your baby – shouldn’t you know what that baby eats, how much it weighs and what it’s first word was? You should also know who you want to aim for – who would be the ideal top six customers that you would love to have on your books? Do you ever stop and think:

  • Why does my business exist?
  • What do I want to accomplish in my business, or my career?
  • What behaviours do I value in my business and in my professional life?
  • How will I achieve my goals?
  • What promise does my brand deliver?
So this led me to think about my business coaching clients and how I support them.  From successful company directors, to NHS managers, and business consultants, I make sure that they understand the foundations of building their business, how to make sure they have full control at any given time in their company’s timeline and how to both protect and promote their work going forward.  My career clients are given the tools to elevate their professional lives and attain the promotions and goals they aspire to. Would you like to experience the same success?  Because now  it’s your turn. ARE YOU ASKING YOURSELF:
  • Why has my business or career hit a plateau?
  • How can I make a life changing career transition?
  • How can I create an action plan?
  • How can I make a lasting impression?
  • Why aren’t I making the right connections?
  • How can I be the “go to” person in my industry?
  • How can I upskill effectively?

Don’t fear the dragon

I love watching Dragons Den; I’m always waiting for another “Trunki” or “Tangle Teezer” moment when the Dragons turn down a fantastic idea only for the inventor to make millions on his/her own.  But there is something that strikes me all too often – how little business owners really know about their own company and by that I mean the nuts and bolts of the finances.  When questioned, all too often they say “well, I have an accountant who deals with that and they told me the figures”.  Of course, having an accountant is great but, hang on, your business is your baby – shouldn’t you know what that baby eats, how much it weighs and what it’s first word was? So this led me to think about my business coaching clients and how I support them.  My latest client, Sharon Cummings, has gone from a standing start to now being Director to a successful consultancy and training company.  You can read about her journey (and my part in it) here:  http://www.proudtoworkinhealthcare.com/sharon-cummings/ As with all my clients, I made sure that Sharon understood the foundations of building her business, how to make sure she had full control at any given time in her company’s timeline and how to both protect and promote her work going forward. Would you like to experience the same success as Sharon?  Now, it’s your turn. ARE YOU ASKING YOURSELF: Why has my business or career hit a plateau? How can I make a life changing career transition? Time to ditch the fax machine

A great article, in yesterday's Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/healthcare-network/2016/apr/27/nhs-technology-saving-the-health-service-one-byte-at-a-time, got me thinking about a report I was recently commissioned to write and the glaring gaps in the "smart" use of IT by the NHS. Let's take this scenario; a service user, with an enduring mental health condition, has a care/crisis plan.  Everyone who may touch that service user's pathway needs access to those plans, so that means primary care, secondary care, community services, the emergency services and ED. First problem, IT platforms that can be accessed by all. Second problem, data protection......that's for discussion on another day. Third problem - the care and crisis plans need to be in a format suitable for systems such as RiO or they can't be audited. So, in the midst of all this, if the service user's condition descends from stability through pre-crisis into full blown crisis; too often none of the agencies involved have systems that connect, the service user's needs are not met and they end up in the Emergency Department.  What was that about making £22bn of efficiency savings by 2020? Time to deal with IT platforms, data sharing and patient needs.  And throw away that fax machine.

Under the Influence?

When you are marketing your new product, scoping your new project or seeking engagement, who are your people of influence?  Those who you really need to get “on side”? I’ve learnt that those in a position of authority aren’t always those who can really make that vital difference to your work and help you progress.  In other words, influential people aren’t necessarily those in a position of seniority.  I’ve spent the last week dipping into Sir Alex Ferguson’s book “Leading”; now, Man U aside, Sir Alex has some interesting observations on the subject of who really wields power when you are negotiating.  Instead of looking at the bottom line, look for the emotion, look for the triggers, look for those who share your values and your vision. So, look around you, think laterally.  More than merely “smoothly the path” this is about building relationships with those who have a story to tell and who can help you tell your’s.
