When you can’t see the wood for the trees, remember the seeds

On Saturday, I had the rare privilege of attending a workshop organised by the fabulous Yael Rose and featuring the inspirational Dr Jane Cox.  The word “inspirational” is over used but Jane is genuinely and totally an inspiration.  If you get the chance to hear her speak, grab it.  I mean it.

Travelling home after the event, I reflected on one particular analogy that Jane used that really resonated with me and my business journey.  If you are taking the time and trouble to read this blog, I feel sure that it will strike a chord with you too.

When you’re building your business, your brand, and staking your claim on the world, you work hard at networking, you blog, you “like” postings on Facebook, you “retweet” or even “quote tweet” on Twitter, you comment on LinkedIn posts, you follow, you invite connections, you send friend requests.  But still you feel that you’re not visible, no work comes in, there is no pipeline, the phone stays silent.  But, trust me, something is happening.  Jane gave a wonderful picture of how you plant seeds in a garden, you can see the seeds, then you cover them up.  You water them, every day, without fail.  You feed them, you nurture them, you keep the weeds away and you keep an eye on the birds and animals that may try to dig those seeds up and steal them.  Then one day, it happens, tiny, just poking up above the soil, but it’s there.  A tiny green shoot.  And the next day?  It’s stronger, and bigger and pushing skyward.  And, of course, you knew all along.  You had faith, you kept going.

So remember those seeds, keep watering them, today could just be the day that the first leaf shows.
